DESCRIPTION:There was a great turnout for the latest workshop\, and several new charities were welcomed to the AI4C community including Solving Kids Cancer\, Maternity Action\, Crohn’s and Colitis UK\, Dementia UK\, Action for Children\, Breast Cancer Now\, Cystic Fibrosis Trust\, WeSee Education and the National Churches Trust.  \nRichard Davis\, the former Chief Data Officer at OFCOM\, gave his take on the data challenges and opportunities from AI\, with one major opportunity being Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG)\, a technique for enhancing the accuracy and reliability of generative AI models with facts fetched from external sources. Data scientist Elle Neal explained the options charities had when using Large Language Models (LLMs) and AI-driven chatbots\, then gave a live demonstration of how RAG LLMs could provide an affordable and viable option. \nCharity members engaged in AI projects also updated the group on where they were at and the current challenges they were facing. \nThe next workshop is due to take place on September 11.

She highlighted the summarisation and expansion apps available\, search and knowledge retrieval tools\, digital and asset creation apps and the coding possibilities with AI. Juan Ginzo of NewsUK then presented an AI use case\, where colleagues from NewsUK and the BBC had used AI to improve the transparency of MPs interests in order to swiftly identify possible news stories. The session concluded with updates from Mental Health Innovation\, Alzheimer’s UK\, AbilityNet and Centrepoint.

DESCRIPTION:Key Presentations included: \nCalm Chatbot Demonstration\n\nA demonstration by Seun Akindele of the Calm Chatbot.  The chatbot was launched 2 months ago to provide out of hours support to the Calm Help Line Callers.  Suen also outlined Calm’s plans for future development and optimisation of the chatbot.\n\nDataKind and Data\n\nDulcia Vousden of DataKind gave an insight on data science and how social change organisation could use it plus how to get started.  This was followed by examples of the business knowledge uncovered by a number of charities as a result of a “data dive” where 100 data analysts worked on the charities data over a weekend.  Dulcia also outlined the other pro bono help available to charities from DataKind.\n\nThe Calm Chatbot and Data Challenges\n\nMaria Kuzak spoke about challenges Calm had experienced with data and their plans to tackle this in the future.\n\nMissing People and Destressing Visitors\n\nSara Rowbotham gave an interesting account of how Missing People have used their chatbot to destress visitors waiting in a queue to connect person to person.\n\n  \nMore details are available to AI4C Members on the AI4C Teams Site
